How to remove odors from silk dresses without washing

Silk is a delicate fabric that requires careful handling, especially when it comes to maintaining its freshness. While washing silk too often can damage its fibers, odors can sometimes build up after prolonged wear. Thankfully, there are several effective methods to freshen your silk dresses and remove odors without resorting to washing or dry cleaning.

Airing Out Your Silk Dress
One of the simplest and most effective ways to freshen your silk dress is to air it out. Silk has natural antimicrobial properties, which means it tends to resist odors on its own. After wearing your dress, hang it in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, to let it breathe. A gentle breeze or fresh air can help eliminate lingering odors without causing any harm to the fabric. For best results, hang it in a closet with good airflow, or use a clothesline in a shaded outdoor area.

Fabric fresheners and sprays
If airing out your dress doesn’t completely remove the odor, fabric sprays designed for delicate fabrics like silk can be an excellent solution. Opt for sprays that are specifically formulated to be safe for fine fabrics. Many fabric fresheners use natural ingredients, such as essential oils or botanical extracts, to neutralize odors without leaving any residue. To use, lightly mist the silk dress from a distance and allow it to dry naturally. Always test the spray on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t affect the fabric's color or texture.

Tip: At Color Vision we prefer Patin-A's B.O.B spray to remove odours. It's a heavy-duty odour remover made for removing not so pleasant scents from theme park and mascot costumes.

Steaming Your Silk Dress
Steaming your silk dress is another effective way to remove odors and refresh the fabric. The steam helps to lift any trapped odors and wrinkles without the harshness of direct heat or water. You can use a handheld garment steamer or a steam function on your iron (set to the lowest heat setting). Hold the steamer a few inches away from the dress and move it gently over the surface, being careful not to saturate the fabric. This method not only eliminates odors but also helps restore the dress’s softness and smoothness.

Using Baking Soda or Charcoal
Baking soda and activated charcoal are both natural odor absorbers that can help freshen your silk dresses without washing them. Place your silk dress in a breathable garment bag (we use Color Visions complimentary 100% organic cotton 120 cm garment bag) or pillowcase with a small sachet of baking soda or charcoal. We use a clean white sock. Leave it overnight to absorb any unwanted odors. These methods are gentle and non-invasive, making them safe for use on silk fabrics.

Freezing Your Silk Dress
An unconventional but effective method to remove odors from silk is freezing. The low temperatures kill bacteria that may cause odors, without affecting the fabric. Place your silk dress in a plastic bag and seal it tightly to avoid moisture buildup. Then, place it in the freezer for 24 hours. Afterward, remove it from the bag and hang it to air out. This method is particularly useful for garments that have been worn in smoky or musty environments.

Removing odors from silk dresses without washing them is also a contribution to the environment by washing and dry cleaning less.  Airing out your dress, using fabric sprays, steaming, and even freezing can help maintain the freshness of your garments without damaging the fabric. These methods will keep your silk dresses looking and smelling beautiful, all while extending their lifespan and protecting their delicate fibers.

But keep in mind, at some point high end silk dresses have to be taken to a professional dry cleaner. Read all about When and how to dryclean your silk dress or What you need to know about professional drycleaning for silk dresses to determine when that might be.
